PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new ligand having phosphine sites at both adjacent positions of one coordinating group capable of coordinating to a plurality of metals by one molecule and a method for producing the ligand. SOLUTION: Provided is a method for producing a compound or its salt expressed by general formula III by reacting a compound belonging e.g. to the group of (diphenylphosphino)benzenesulfonic acid with a basic compound and reacting the reaction product with a phosphine halide. In the formula III, R<SP>1</SP>is a group selected from -SO<SB>3</SB>H, -SO<SB>2</SB>NH(R<SP>2</SP>), -CO<SB>2</SB>H, -PO<SB>3</SB>H, -AsO<SB>3</SB>H, -SiO<SB>2</SB>H and -C(CF<SB>3</SB>)<SB>2</SB>OH; R<SP>2</SP>is a substituent; X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, X<SP>3</SP>and X<SP>4</SP>are each a 1-20C substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group, an alkoxy group or an aryloxy group; and n is an integer of 0-3.
