PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing aromatic polymers allowing easy production of aromatic polymers with a high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution (a low value of weight average molecular weight/number average molecular weight). SOLUTION: The method for producing aromatic polymers includes polycondensation of an aromatic compound represented by the formula (I): X-Ar-B(OQ<SP>1</SP>)<SB>2</SB>in the presence of a base, polymerization catalyst, and surfactant or phase-transfer catalyst. In the formula, Ar is a divalent group containing an aromatic ring, and X is a halogen atom, nitro group, or a monovalent group represented by -SO<SB>3</SB>Q (where, Q represents a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group).
