The invention concerns an illumination system, with a light source (1) emitting light of at least a first wavelength, and a luminescent element (2) which is irradiated with the light emitted by the light source (1) and which emits light of at least a second wavelength which is different from the first wavelength, wherein the luminescent element (2) is comprised of a plurality of sub-elements (5) which are each in heat conducting contact with a heat sink (7). This way, an illumination system is provided which can be used as a white light source with high brightness and absence of speckle.
