[Class 143] [See also Group XX] The moisture-content of solid material, e.g. sand or gravel for making concrete, is determined by placing in a test vessel in the scale pan of a weighing scale of the moving pointer type a quantity of the moist material sufficient to bring the pointer to an index mark, the position of which is predetermined in accordance with the specific gravity of the material when dry, and thereafter adding water to bring the mixture of material and water to a predetermined volume (e.g. the whole volume of the test vessel), the moisture content being then indicated by the pointer on a, moisture content scale. In the weighing scale shown, the single index mark is replaced by a number of specific gravity graduations 12 for use with materials of different specific gravity. The moisture content scale 14 decreases in a direction away from the zero of the pointer 2. The weighing scale may be provided with an index mark A and a specific gravity scale 10 for use in determining the specific gravity of the material when dry. In use sufficient dry material is placed in the test vessel 6 to bring the pointer 2 to the index A. The vessel 6 is then filled with water, the pivoted lid 16 swung to the closed position, and the specific gravity read off from the position to which the pointer moves on the scale 10. The vessel 6 is then emptied and a quantity of the moist material sufficient to move the pointer 2 to the specific gravity graduation on the scale 12 corresponding to that determined from the scale 10 is placed in the vessel 6. The latter is then filled with water and the moisture content is indicated directly on the scale 14. |
