PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a staple fiber for a nonwoven fabric which includes a polyester having excellent crystallinity while having a low melting point, is produceable in good operability using a usual production apparatus, is suitably usable for nonwoven fabric applications formed not only by an airlaid method but also by a dry or wet method, enables the processing at a low temperature when being subjected to thermobonding, and has a small heat shrinkage to obtain a nonwoven fabric in good dimensional stability, and to provide a stape fiber nonwoven fabric using the staple fiber for the nonwoven fabric. SOLUTION: The staple fiber for the nonwoven fabric is a conjugate fiber constituted of a polyester A comprising a dicarboxylic acid component consisting essentially of terephthalic acid and a diol component containing 50 mol% or more of 1,6-hexanediol, containing 0.01-5.0 mass% nucleating agent, having a melting point of 100-150°C, and providing a DSC curve obtained by a DSC, exhibiting temperature-dropping crystallization and satisfying a special expression, and a polylactic acid-based polymer having a melting point not less than 30°C, which is higher than the melting point of the polyester A.
