The method involves providing a signal (pos) characterizing a position of a transmission selector lever (5) and another signal (pos') characterizing an operating condition of an electric motor (1) and/or a vehicle e.g. hybrid vehicle, by a safety device (4). A release signal or an error signal is generated from the signals by the safety device, and is provided as an input signal (e2) directly into an electric motor control (2). A highly prioritized intervention control is provided on the electric motor in accordance with another input signal (e1) that is based on the target value. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a drive strand of a vehicle.
