PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit occurrence of knocking in transient operation during compression ratio change, and to effectively prevent drop of acceleration performance and deterioration of operability. SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine provided with: a compression ratio variable mechanism making a compression ratio variable; and a valve train making operation characteristics of an intake valve variable, a change speed of compression ratio by the compression ratio variable mechanism is detected in a first half of compression stroke of each cycle, an effective compression ratio at compression top dead center in the cycle is estimated based on close timing of the intake valve and the change speed of the detected compression ratio, an ignition timing in the cycle is set based on the estimated effective compression ratio, and an ignition is executed at the set ignition timing.
