PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device capable of inputting characters with minimum key input. SOLUTION: The character input device comprises a keypad 10 with a large number of input keys arranged to sense a direction dragged after input; a memory part for storing a large number of key tables corresponding to the keypad, voice tables for characters, and input characters; a voice output part for outputting voice signals through a speaker 55; a control part for not only calling the voice signals for characters input from the keypad, from the voice table stored in the memory and outputting them to the voice output part but also storing the formed characters continuously in the memory part and interfacing with external equipment through an interface part; an operating switch 20 for operating the control part; and an operation indicating lamp 40 for displaying the operating state of the control part.
