<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a monohydric alcohol from a monocarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof. <P>SOLUTION: A monohydric alcohol can be produced in a high yield from a monocarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof as a raw material irrespective of whether it contains water or not by using a catalyst comprising Ru and Sn components supported on zinc oxide, a catalyst produced by adding a limited amount of an inorganic binder such as silica or alumina or a titanium oxide to a catalyst comprising the above components in order to impart moldability, or a catalyst modified by further adding at least one improving component selected from the group consisting of the reducing components such as Co, Ni, Cu, Ag, Rh, Pd, Re, Ir, and Pt in order to improve reducing ability. This method can be operated under very mild conditions by using a well-known catalyst, can provide high selectivity and high productivity, which make a monohydric alcohol to be economically produced, and can be advantageously applied to commercial production because of the excellent long-term reaction stability of the catalyst. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT</p> |
