PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and device for extracting and recognizing a road sign in real time from an image obtained by a video camera to be mounted on a vehicle. SOLUTION: A special slit fi is set in a video image displayed on a screen 13, a sign probability calculation processing part 20 detects presence of the road sign from color components of pixel data on the slit by an HSV conversion processing part 16. When it is decided that the road sign exists on the slit, a detection area setting processing part 19 applies a detection area with predetermined size on a range decided to include the road sign on the slit. A contour detection processing part 24 extracts a contour ri of the road sign extracted by binarization. A shape type determination processing part 25 determines a type from the contour Ri of the road sign. A sign recognition processing part 26 selects a road sign which is the most similar to features of a picture image of the road sign in the area in the determined type, and recognizes the road sign as the road sign detected by a video camera 1.
