The invention relates to a protection device for removing signal interference in a passive optical network, in which a central optical cable (1) is split into several branch lines (3) at a branching point (2), comprising: a plurality of first pickups (A1, A2, . . . , A4) and/or a second pickup (A0), wherein, in at least part of each of the branching cables (3), there is a first pickup to detect an optical signal flowing in the particular branch line (3) to the central cable (1), and/or wherein the second pickup (A0) is provided in the central cable (1) to detect an optical signal flowing in the central cable (1) away from the branching point (2); a plurality of switches (S1, S2, . . . , S4), wherein, in at least one part of each of the branching cables (3), there is a switch to switch off the particular branching cable (3); wherein the protection device includes a control device (C0; C1, C2, . . . , C4) constructed in such a way that when signal interference occurs in operation of the passive optical network, a detection process is performed to determine whether the signal detected by the first pickup (A0) while one or more branching cables (3) is/are turned off is a sequence of digital signal levels from a plurality of signal levels whose level values consist exclusively of a pre-defined Low level and a predefined High level, and wherein the switch(es) (S1, S2, . . . , S4) in the one or more branching cables (3), temporarily turned off, permanently turn off the one or more branch cables (3) upon the detection of a digital signal level sequence.
