<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent performance degradation and unnecessary consumption of bandwidth resources of a logically multiplexed line, including as an object to be multiplexed, a path which includes nodes with path multiplexing function. <P>SOLUTION: In a communication system comprising a plurality of nodes, one of them is the node with the path multiplexing function, and a transmission node which distributes a load transmits a path multiplexing request message to the node with the path multiplexing function. When receiving the message, the node with the path multiplexing function functions as a relay node and determines whether a primary path and a secondary path can be multiplexed logically, by providing the bandwidth of an interconnect link from the relay node to a reception node, as a communication partner of the transmission node; and if path multiplexing is possible, a path multiplexing acknowledgement message. including information needed for load distribution. is returned to the transmission node.
