PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image forming apparatus which can suppress deterioration of image reading quality while they can stably carry sheets. SOLUTION: A first pair of lead rollers 117 and a second pair of lead rollers 118 each are composed of a plurality of rotary body pairs 117a, 117b, 118a, 118b which are arranged in directions which are perpendicularly intersect to a sheet carrying direction, and are changeable to a compressing state in which the plurality of the rotary body pairs 117a, 117b, 118a, 118b compress a paper, and a light compressing separation state in which at least a rotation body pair out of the plurality of rotation body pairs 117a, 117b, 118a, 118b is separated, and compressing force of other rotation body pairs is weaker than the compressing force in the compressing state. Moreover, positions of a width direction agree for the compressed rotation body pair of the first pair of the lead rollers 117 and the compressed rotation body pair of the second pair of the lead rollers 118 in the light compressing separation state.
