The system has a locating device (10) i.e. radar sensor, for detecting a preceding vehicle and for measuring a distance to the vehicle. A control device (12) selects an object located by the device as a target object and changes acceleration of its own vehicle within a limited variation range by engagement within drive and brake systems (14, 16) of the vehicle to regulate the distance to the target object to a target distance. A limiting device (18) activatable by a control element (20) e.g. key, by a driver limits the variation range for the acceleration. The system has an indicator device e.g. LED, providing a feedback to the driver, when the limiting device is active.
