PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain adaptable values of control parameters capable of improving engine characteristics of a transition period, in an engine having a control device generating response delays, relating to an adaptation method and an adaptation device for the engine control parameters. SOLUTION: The adaptation method of the engine control parameters includes: a step for measuring engine characteristic data, a step for calculating response surface function of the engine characteristics, based on the engine characteristic data; a step for calculating regular optimal values of the engine control parameters by using the response surface function; a step for setting a variable area of the response delay parameter in the case of changing a load and/or a speed of the engine; and a step for calculating an adaptable value of each engine control parameters, in the descending order of robustness for a predetermined engine characteristic value of the plurality of engine control parameters, when the response delay parameter change within the variable area.
