Disclosed is an alkaline fuel cell wherein a crossover to the cathode can be quickly detected. Specifically disclosed is an alkaline fuel cell wherein an electrode-electrolyte membrane assembly (130), which is composed of an anion exchange membrane (133), a cathode (131) arranged in contact with one side of the anion exchange membrane (133), an anode (132) arranged in contact with the other side of the anion exchange membrane (133) and a sealing member (143), is held between a cathode collector (141) and an anode collector (142) respectively arranged in contact with the cathode (131) and the anode (132). The alkaline fuel cell generates electric power by supplying an alkali-containing liquid fuel (160) into a fuel container (110) arranged in contact with the anode (132). The alkaline fuel cell further comprises, on the surface of the cathode (131), an exchangeable moisturizing material (152) for moisturizing the cathode (131). The moisturizing material (152) is at least partially provided with a pH-indicating portion (153) the color of which changes in accordance with the pH. Consequently, changes in pH of the cathode (131) can be visually judged through color changes of the pH-indicating portion (153).
