The method involves selecting one of torque models for providing efficiency limit based on influence of the efficiency limit, where the influence takes place during active interventional function, and the efficiency limit corresponds to a largest possible or smallest possible efficiency. The largest possible or smallest possible efficiency is actually provided by an internal combustion engine (2). A control limit for a hypothetical actual torque is determined based on information of an optimal toque and the efficiency limit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control unit for determining a control limit for a hypothetical actual torque of an internal combustion engine (2) a computer program comprising a program code to perform a method for determining a control limit for a hypothetical actual torque of an internal combustion engine.
