PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve display quality of a vertical alignment liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element has a pair of opposed substrates, counter electrode patterns formed on facing sides of the substrates, vertical alignment film formed covering the counter electrode patterns for the substrates, a vertical alignment liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the substrates, and a pair of polarizing plates disposed outside the substrates. The liquid crystal display element also has a black mask configured such that edges of the counter electrode patterns includes zigzag patterns composed of sides parallel or perpendicular to an in-plane direction of a liquid crystal director for a liquid crystal layer collapsed by voltage application between the counter electrode patterns and cover edges of a display pattern defined by the counter electrode patterns.
