PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute optical encoder capable of shortening an action time on detecting a starting point, capable of improving the operational efficiency of an apparatus to which the encoder is attached, having a short action time for returning to the starting point, capable of high speed action and having a high resolution. SOLUTION: The absolute optical encoder is configured by including a scale 1 having a measuring track in which a coding pattern for measurement is formed with a same pitch and a starting point detecting track 3, and a photo pickup part for obtaining a signal corresponding to the code from the scale 1, and prepares absolute data from 2 different signals having different phase obtained from this photo pickup part, wherein the starting point detecting track 3 in the scale 1 has a plurality of starting point marks 4a, 4b, 4c and starting point position confirmation marks 5a, 5b, 5c formed between the starting point marks 4a, 4b, 4c.
