PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an L-cysteine-producing bacterium and to provide a method for producing a compound such as L-cysteine using the bacterium, by developing a new technique improving L-cysteine productivity of the bacterium. SOLUTION: A bacterium belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae is modified so that activity of a protein having L-cysteine productivity and encoded by yhaM gene, for example, activity of a protein described in the following (A) or (B) is lowered, and the bacterium is cultured in a medium, and L-cystine, L-cysteine or a derivative thereof or a mixture thereof is collected to produce these compounds. (A): a protein having an amino acid sequence composed of a specific sequence. (B): a protein having an amino acid sequence containing substitution, deletion, insertion or addition of one or several amino acids in an amino acid sequence composed of a specific sequence and improving L-cysteine productivity when lowering activity in the bacterium.
