The method involves dividing a surrounding into multiple areas (60,62,64,70,72,74) outside a vehicle (100). An unrestricted upper beam distribution is adjusted, if no other road user is identified in the areas. A partial upper beam distribution is adjusted, if another road user is identified in an activation area and no other road user is identified in a deactivation area. The partial upper beam distribution corresponds to an unrestricted upper beam distribution.
