PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact zoom lens for obtaining high optical performance over the whole zoom range at a high zoom ratio. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes a positive refractive power first lens group, a negative refractive power second lens group, and a positive refractive power third lens group from an object side to an image side. The zoom lens in which at least the first lens group moves when being zoomed, includes an F number determination diaphragm for determining an open F number light flux, and the third lens group includes at least one negative lens and a positive lens at the nearest image side. A distance Ds of an optical axis direction from an image side apex of the negative lens arranged at the nearest image side of the third lens group to the F number determination diaphragm, a focal distance fw of the zoom lens in a wide angle end, a focal distance ft of the zoom lens in a telephoto end and a focal distance f3 of the third lens group are properly set respectively.
