The apparatus is composed of an emitter EMET of a periodic signal of linear frequency ramps injected into a passive hybrid coupler COUPL HY which directs them through a pathway 1 towards emission through a circulator CIRCL followed by a microwave antenna ANT and along a pathway 2 towards a mixer module MELA. The return signal picked up by the antenna ANT is directed by the circulator CIRCL towards the mixer so as to be converted into a digital signal and processed in a module MOTRA providing the spectral data directly utilizable for detecting and locating discontinuities. This invention is relevant to numerous fields including diagnostics in the building industry and checks on the quality and ageing of materials.
