摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device having improved and enhanced contrast in a displayed image in a specified viewing angle direction. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device 1 includes: a liquid crystal panel including a pair of substrates that sandwiches a liquid crystal layer 20 containing liquid crystal molecules LC exhibiting a parallel alignment in an initial alignment state; and a pair of polarizing plates 36 and 56 disposed on either side of the liquid crystal panel. The liquid crystal molecules LC are inclined at a pretilt angleθ<SB>1</SB>and aligned in a predetermined direction in planes of the substrates. The liquid crystal panel emits light L entering through one of the polarizing plates 36 and 56 toward the other. The liquid crystal panel emits light having the maximum intensity in a direction different from a direction normal to the substrates. The azimuth of the maximum-light-intensity direction D projected onto the planes of the substrates is substantially parallel to the predetermined direction. The maximum-light-intensity direction D is a direction inclined from the direction normal to the substrates toward a direction in which the maximum-light-intensity direction D forms a right angle with the longitudinal direction of the crystal molecules LC inclined at the pretilt angleθ<SB>1</SB>. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT</p>
