<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element having both phase shift adjusting function and polarizing function, and a liquid crystal display device, and to provide a liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The optical element 10 comprises: a polarization layer 11 formed of an inorganic material; and a retardation layer 12 formed of an inorganic material having a birefringent effect and laminated so that an optical axis 12ax crosses a polarization axis 11ax of the polarization layer 11. Since the optical element 12 has a configuration in which conventional polarizing plate and retardation plate are integrated, reduction in the number of parts to be incorporated to a liquid crystal display element, and resultant improvement in handling property and further in assembling property of the parts can be achieved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
