<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus with a composition assisting function that assists in obtaining a suitable composition without superimposing an image to be referred to as the suitable composition on a preview image, and to provide a composition assisting method of the same imaging apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: When a photograph is taken with a digital camera, a reference composition showing a suitable composition for a preview image is determined (step S60). The the angle of field of photography is changed without changing the attitude of the camera body so that differences between the reference image and preview image becomes smaller (step S66). When the reference composition matches the preview image, the angle of field of photography is put back to the original angle of field (step S68).
