PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk recording and reproducing apparatus which reliably records information by detecting a defect in real time even while recording the information in a recordable optical disk such as a DVD-RAM. SOLUTION: A defect mask signal generation circuit generates defect mask signals to a level difference part of an RF signal in the boundary area between a pair of inner address data and outer address data zigzag-arranged in a header area, a level difference part of the RF signal in the boundary area between the header area and a recording area, and a non-recording area in the recording area. In the recording area, a defect is detected in a section wherein a header gate signal is in a low level and a defect mask signal is also in a low level.
