The following car stereo (1) is disclosed. When, for example, a hand comes close to the detection coverage of a proximity sensor (6) disposed in the vicinity of an illumination button (4b) at the time of all lights out of lightings (10,11) of a display unit (3) and operating unit (4) provided on a front unit (2a), the lighting (11) of the illumination button (4b) only is switched on. When the illumination button (4b) is operated within a preset given time, the lightings (10) of the display unit (3) and operating unit (4) are switched on. When the illumination button (4b) is not operated within the preset given time, the lighting (11) of the illumination button (4b) is switched off to thereby return to the all lights out.
