An image forming apparatus, including an image bearer; and a protectant applicator applying a protectant including zinc stearate and zinc palmitate to the surface thereof, wherein an average amount of the protectant adhering thereto is from 0.4 to 2.0 mug/cm2 after 500 images are produced, and wherein the following relationships are satisfied: <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>X=Sb/Sa <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> wherein X represents an index of the amount of the protectant adhering at an arbitrary point thereon; Sa represents a peak area in a wavenumber domain of from 1,765 to 1,786 cm-1 in an infrared absorption spectrum; and Sb represents a peak area in a wavenumber domain of from 1,533 to 1,547 cm-1, and <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>DeltaXi/Xave<0.3 <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> wherein Xi represent the indices X at n-pieces of the arbitrary points in an image forming area thereof along its longitudinal direction; Xave represents an average of the n-pieces of Xi; and DeltaXi represents a variation of Xi.
