A method and an apparatus for handling a contention-based random access procedure are provided to suitably stop retransmission of a scheduling transmission message, thereby preventing unnecessary consumption of power of UE. A scheduling transmission message for applying an HARQ(Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest) process for transmission is transmitted(402). A contention resolution timer is started and a PDCCH(Physical Downlink Control Channel) is monitored(404). A buffer of an HARQ process used for transmission of the scheduling transmission message is vacated when a contention result of a random access procedure is determined(406).
