PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intermediate transfer apparatus which has a plurality of grooves on the surface of a member on the rear side of an intermediate transfer belt and in the detecting area of the optical reflective sensor, and prevents foreign matters from entering into the gap between the intermediate transfer belt and the surface of the member. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is configured such that the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 4 for transferring a toner image from an image carrier 1 is a reflecting plate and using an optical reflective sensor 6, density adjustment patterns and color alignment patterns on the intermediate transfer belt 4 are detected on the curvature of a following roller 7 supporting the intermediate transfer belt 4. In the image forming apparatus, the plurality of grooves 7b are formed in the surface of the following roller 7 and in the area of the intermediate transfer belt 4 in which the optical reflective sensor 6 detects the density adjustment patterns and color alignment patterns.
