PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether respective operations involving two intake valves provided for each cylinder are normally performed or not, in the case of switching between a two-valve operation for opening and closing both the intake valves and a one-valve operation (partial valve stop operation) for opening and closing an intake valve while keeping another intake valve in a valve-close state. SOLUTION: The one-valve operation (rotation variation is small) and the two-valve operation (rotation variation is large) are distinguished based on change in a cam shaft rotation speed on opening the intake valves. Specifically, the distinction is made based on variation amplitude of a cam stem rotation speed, fall quantities, an integrated value of the fall quantities on opening the intake valves.
