PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shape measurement method and device for correctly reading a pattern even if an object to be measured includes a glossy surface or a complicated shape, and having a high shape recognition ability. SOLUTION: An initial pattern is projected to the object to be measured 9 with a projector 5, and the object 9 to which the initial pattern is projected is photographed with cameras 1, 3. The lightness values of the images picked up with the cameras 1, 3 are read. A measuring pattern is determined while darkening portions of a read image where its lightness is higher than a set target lightness, and lightening portions of the image where its lightness is lower. With the measuring pattern projected onto the object 9, the object is photographed with the cameras 1, 3, and from the picked-up images the shape of the object 9 is obtained.
