A digital image processing apparatus for detecting a still image from a moving picture and a control method thereof are provided to generate only the image frame which satisfies a preset image quality standard as a still image file. A digital image processing apparatus comprises a digital signal processor. The digital signal processor(36) detects the preset number of image frames, including the first image frame which corresponds to the time when a still image selection signal is inputted while a moving picture is being reproduced, and generates image frames which satisfies a preset image quality standard among the image frames, as still image files. The digital signal processor includes an image frame detection part(36-1), a picture quality determining part(36-2) and a file generator(36-3).
