A method and an apparatus for processing an audio signal are provided to control an object gain and panning based on user selection. An information generation unit(710) receives a downmix signal, object information and mix information and generates downmix processing information by using the object information and mix information. A downmix processing unit(720) analyzes a downmix signal by a subband signal. The downmix processing unit processes a subband signal by using downmix processing information and generates an output signal by using the processed subband signal. The number of channels of the downmix signal is the same as the number of output signals. The number of the output signals corresponds to a time domain signal. A multi-channel decoder(730) generates a multi-channel output signal by using the processed downmix and multi-channel parameter.
