<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inter-vehicle distance control device capable of preventing a traffic accident. <P>SOLUTION: The inter-vehicle distance control device obtains information on the position of its own vehicle showing the position of the own vehicle by a satellite communication, performs a wireless communication with an inter-vehicle distance control device mounted on other vehicles when they are present around the own vehicle, and acquires the information on the positions of the other vehicles showing the positions of the other vehicles. The inter-vehicle distance control device refers to a map database showing a map, specifies information on the position of the specific other vehicle showing the position of the specific other vehicle traveling ahead of the own vehicle or behind it from among all the pieces of information on the positions of the other vehicles, and calculates an inter-vehicle distance showing the distance between the own vehicle and the specific other vehicle based on the position shown by the information on the position of the own vehicle and the position shown by the information on the position of the specific other vehicle. The inter-vehicle distance control device measures the speed of the own vehicle, refers to a distance database that associates the speed with the appropriate inter-vehicle distance, and retrieves a retrieval appropriate inter-vehicle distance as an appropriate inter-vehicle distance corresponding to the speed of the own vehicle.
