PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary battery of which a safety protection element is efficiently operated even when brought into an overcharged state, etc., due to unusual use and malfunction of a protection circuit or the like, and which is superior in safety. SOLUTION: The secondary battery is configured such that the safety protection element operated by sensing temperature is electrically connected. In the secondary battery, a metal lead terminal 6a which electrically connects a negative electrode plate 6 and a battery case 1 is made a member having smaller electric conductivity than that of the metal lead terminal 5a which electrically connects a positive electrode plate 5 and a seal 2, the metal lead terminal 6a of a negative electrode is arranged at the outermost periphery of an electrode plate group 14, and the safety protection element is brought into contact with the outside of a battery case 1 side face opposite to the metal lead terminal 6a of this negative electrode.
