<p>A plurality of reflective spatial light modulator arrays (100 ) combined together to form a larger display (120 ). Each array (100 ) can include a plurality of light modulating elements (106 ) disposed on a substrate ( 20 ). Nonimage areas (1 1 1, 112 ) may exist between active areas and/or at a perimeter of the light modulating elements (106 ). A plurality of optical elements (124 ) each having an input aperture (126 ) and an output aperture (128 ) can be used to reduce the visible effect of the nonimage areas (1 1 1, 1 12 ). The input apertures ( 126 ) are disposed distally and the output apertures (128 ) are disposed proximally respectively to the light modulating elements (106 ) such that light received propagates to exit the output apertures ( 128 ) to the light modulating elements (106 ). The input apertures (126 ) are larger than the output apertures (128 ) thereby reducing the amount of dead space between active areas of light modulating elements (106 ) seen by a viewer. Display drive circuitry can be disposed away from dead space at the perimeter of the arrays ( 100 ) and electrically connected to the light modulating elements at locations between the light modulating elements (106 ) on a substrate ( 20 ). The light modulating elements (106 ) can include microelectromechanical systems, such as interferometric modulators.</p> |
