A recoding/reproducing apparatus and method are provided to rotate a recoding disk with stable surface vibration at high speed by considering the load of the spindle motor. A recoding/reproducing apparatus comprises a spindle motor unit(501), a stabilizer plate(507), a torque detection unit(506), an adjustment unit, and a determination unit. The spindle motor unit comprises a spindle(502) in which a recording disk(500) is placed and rotated. The stabilizer plate is arranged to face the recording disk. The torque detection unit detects the drive torque applied to the spindle motor unit. The determination unit determines the optimum interval based on the detected drive torque. The adjustment unit regulates the interval between the stabilizer plate and the recording disk to the optimum interval.
