PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner capable of preventing over-tensioning of a chain in low-temperature environments. SOLUTION: This chain tensioner is structured such that a plunger 10 is slidably inserted into a closed-end cylindrical housing 9, an oil supply passage 25 for introducing hydraulic oil into a pressure chamber 24 surrounded by the housing 9 and the plunger 10 is formed, a check valve 27 is arranged at the exit of the oil supply passage 25, a return spring 22 energizing the plunger 10 in a direction projecting from the housing 9 is arranged, and the chain 6 is pressed by a projecting end of the plunger 10 from the housing 9. In the chain tensioner, a primary-side escape passage 31 branching from the middle of the oil supply passage 25 is formed, and a primary-side relief valve 34 relieving the pressure in the oil supply passage 25 when increasing larger than preset pressure is incorporated in the primary-side escape passage 31.
