A motorcycle transmission system comprises first and second epicyclic gearsets, each including a sun gear 4, 6 and a carrier 14, 20 rotatably carrying at least one planet gear 8, 16, which is in driving engagement with the associated sun gear 4, 6 and with an associated annulus gear 12, 22. The transmission system also includes first and second permanent magnet type electric motor/generators comprising first and second stators 28, 30; 34, 30 and first and second rotors 24, 26. The two stators include electrical connections which are connected together via a controller arranged to control the flow of electrical power between them. The first and second sun gears 4, 6 are an input to the transmission. The rotor 24 of the first motor/generator is connected to rotate with the first ring gear 12. The first carrier 14 is connected to rotate with either the second ring gear 22 or the second carrier 20. The rotor 26 of the second motor/generator is connected to rotate with the second ring gear 22. The second carrier 20 constitutes the output of the transmission system. The motor/generator may be of an axial flux type which has stators that are movable in an axial direction by using a worm wheel 44 meshing with a worm screw 46.
