The method involves reading and storing a sensor signal of a height sensor (10) in a preselected time window and implementing a frequency range transformation of the sensor signal. The frequency spectrum is analyzed within the range of a predetermined wheel natural frequency. A sensor defect is recognized, when the frequency spectrum deviates in an impermissible manner from a set point. A message is output during recognition of sensor defect and/or introducing a system reaction to a recognized sensor defect. An independent claim is also included for a chassis control system monitoring device comprising an electronic unit.
