A mercury free surface light source structure and a driving method thereof are provided to maintain a uniform and stable discharge by alternately applying a bipolar driving voltage to a pair of main electrodes. A mercury free surface light source structure includes a top plate(10), a bottom plate(20), and a barrier rib(30). The barrier rib forms a discharge space between the top plate and the bottom plate. A pair of main electrodes(X,Y) is patterned on the top plate or the bottom plate. A bipolar driving voltage is alternately applied to a pair of main electrodes. A pair of sub electrodes(I1,I2) is patterned on the top plate or the bottom plate, and corresponds to a pair of main electrodes. A discharge of the mercury free surface light source structure is determined by the driving voltage applied to a pair of sub electrodes. |
