An apparatus for charging and driving an electric vehicle, and a method for charging the electric vehicle are provided to exclude a separate charging unit by using a freewheeling diode as a rectifying unit. A high voltage battery unit(1) includes a high voltage battery(BH). The high voltage battery is charged with a DC high voltage. A motor driving unit(3) includes arm switches of three pairs and an inverter driving circuit(3a). The arm switches converts the charging voltage of the high voltage battery into an AC voltage. The inverter driving circuit controls drive of the arm switches. A three phase induction motor(5) is driven by the three phase AC voltage of the motor driving unit in order to supply a power source of a vehicle. A DC-DC converter unit(2) is arranged between the high voltage battery unit and the motor driving unit in order to supply the charging voltage of the high voltage battery to the motor driving unit.
