The illumination system (8) of a slit lamp microscope (stereomicroscope) (1) is rotatable in the right and left directions, and projects illumination light to a subject's eye via an illumination diaphragm (56). An observation system (6) has right and left optical systems for guiding the illumination light passed through an objective lens (31) and reflected off the subject's eye (E). A front-end lens (20) is arranged between the objective lens (31) and the subject's eye E. The front-end lens (20) is moved at least in the right and left directions by means of a front-end lens holder (14). When the inside of the subject's eye is observed, the slit lamp microscope (1) makes the illumination light exiting the illumination system (8) enter the eye through the front-end lens (20) under a state where the axis (O2) of illumination light and the axis (O1) of observation light are arranged in non-parallel and the optical axis (OF) of the front-end lens and the axis (01) of observation light are separated from each other in the right and left directions so that the illumination light reflected in the eye enters the observation system (6) through the front-end lens (20).</p>
