Disclosed herein is an update apparatus and method for adaptively updating a lifting-based directional wavelet transform. The update apparatus includes a polyphase sample characteristic analysis unit for analyzing characteristics of even polyphase samples and predicted odd polyphase samples, a multi-update direction selection unit for selecting one update direction different from a prediction direction or selecting two or more update directions (multi-update direction), a remaining sample position calculation unit for calculating positions of a plurality of predicted odd polyphase samples required for the removal of aliasing, and an update unit for performing update using the multi-update direction selected by the multi-update direction selection unit and the positions of the plurality of predicted odd polyphase samples calculated by the remaining sample position calculation unit.
