PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transparent composite material having low linear expansion coefficient, usable in a plastic substrate for a liquid crystal display and an organic EL display of excellent transparency, a display substrate for an electronic paper display or the like, or a solar cell substrate. SOLUTION: (1) The transparent composite material prepared by curing a resin composition dispersed with 10-40 mass wt.% of synthetic smectite organized with a quaternary ammonium salt and/or a quaternary phosphonium salt and having 10-300 nm of number average particle diameter and 1-300 of aspect ratio, with respect to 60-90 mass% of vinyl ester resin composition containing a vinyl ester resin synthesized from an aliphatic epoxy compound. (2) A method for manufacturing the transparent composite material of curing a composite material raw material composition before cured, by an electron beam (EB), an ultraviolet ray (UV) or heat.
