PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder which detects the direction and the amount of the rotation of a spherical body by a simple constitution. SOLUTION: The encoder which detects optically the direction and the amount of rotation around two axes of the spherical body 7 has an optical scale 10 which includes patterns 10a and 10b formed into shapes of concentric circles around the two axes 10c and 10d, respectively, and is formed on the surface or the inside of the spherical body 7, and a pair of reading parts each of which has a light-emitting element 13a radiating light and a light-receiving element 13b receiving the light emitted from the light-emitting element 13a and made to be interfered by the optical scale.
