PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a tilt angle of a screw conveyor comparatively large without impeding the retreat of a cutter head in a shield machine comprising a shield cylinder 1, the cutter head 2 excavating the ground in front of the shield cylinder, a bulkhead 3 provided at the front end inner periphery of the shield cylinder and supporting the cutter head rotatably and movably in a longitudinal direction, a rotating drive source 5 for rotating the cutter head, an advancing and retreating drive source 6 for advancing and retreating the cutter head for the bulkhead in front and rear directions and the screw conveyor 7 connected to a soil removing port provided at the lower part of the bulkhead. SOLUTION: A support case 32 journaling a shaft part 26 of the cutter head 2 in a longitudinally unmovable manner is supported to the bulkhead 3 movably in the longitudinal direction, and the rotating drive source 5 is mounted to the support case 32. An advancing/retreating drive source 6 connected to the support case 32 is mounted to the bulkhead 3, and the cutter head 2 is advanced/retreated in the longitudinal direction by the advancing/retreating drive source 6 through the support case 32.
