The illumination device has a flat light conducting element (6) containing two flat sides (8,9) and multiple narrow sides (10,13) connected by the flat sides. A light source (3) is provided to a narrow side of the flat light conducting element. The flat sides of the flat light conducting element are formed such that a part of the decoupled light is conducted to another narrow side of the flat light conducting element. The latter narrow side is formed as a small light decoupling surface.
